Every week, someone messages our team asking a version of the same question. How much should I actually take? It sounds simple, but almost nowhere online gives a straight answer. Forums hedge. Old blog posts recycle the same vague advice. Product pages talk about strains without ever mentioning grams. So we are going to answer it properly, once, in plain language, grounded in how psilocybin actually behaves in the body.
This guide holds regardless of where in the region you are ordering from, Kingston, Cornwall, Brockville and Belleville included. If you are also weighing how a decision to use might affect employment, our piece on whether magic mushrooms show up on a drug test is a useful companion read.
The dosage tiers, in grams
Psilocybin experiences fall into a handful of well understood tiers, based on dried Psilocybe cubensis weight. These numbers are not exact science for every body, but they are a reliable starting map.
- Microdose, 0.1 to 0.3 grams. Sub perceptual. You should not feel intoxicated. Many people report subtle improvements in focus, mood and creativity. This is the range used in our microdose capsules.
- Threshold, 0.3 to 0.7 grams. The first hints of perceptual change. Colors might feel slightly warmer, music slightly more textured. Still very manageable.
- Low dose, 0.7 to 1.5 grams. Often called beginner's paradise. A real, clearly noticeable experience, with mood lift, light visual changes and introspection, without becoming overwhelming for most first time users.
- Moderate dose, 1.5 to 3.5 grams. A full, classic psychedelic experience. Visuals, altered thought patterns, emotional depth. This is the range experienced users typically settle into.
- High dose, 3.5 to 5 grams. Intense and immersive. Best reserved for people who already know how they respond to psilocybin.
- Heroic dose, 5 grams and above. A term popularized to describe doses intended to fully dissolve ordinary awareness. Not a beginner range under any circumstance.
Why 1 to 1.5 grams is the honest beginner recommendation
If you take nothing else from this guide, take this. For a genuine first experience with a classic strain like Golden Teacher or B+, 1 to 1.5 grams dried is the range we, and most experienced guides, actually recommend. It is enough to produce a real, meaningful experience, not a placebo, while staying well short of overwhelming for the vast majority of healthy adults.
Some guides push beginners toward 0.5 grams, treating it almost like a microdose. In our experience that often just produces confusion, a vague, unsatisfying half experience that leaves someone unsure whether anything happened at all. Others push new users straight to 2 or 3 grams, which can be genuinely overwhelming without any prior reference point. The 1 to 1.5 gram range threads that needle.
Body weight matters less than you would think
It is a common assumption that dosing should scale with body weight the way alcohol does. Psilocybin does not behave that way. The relationship between body mass and perceived intensity is real but far weaker than most people expect, since psilocybin acts on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain rather than being diluted across total blood volume the way alcohol is.
In practice, this means a 110 pound first time user and a 220 pound first time user often land in a similar useful starting range, 1 to 1.5 grams. Individual sensitivity, prior experience, current mood and setting tend to matter more than scale alone. If you are meaningfully smaller than average and want extra caution, starting at the lower end of that range, closer to 1 gram, is a reasonable adjustment. It is not a reason to abandon the range entirely.
Weigh it, do not eyeball it
Dried mushroom pieces vary enormously in density and moisture. A cap and a stem of visually similar size can differ in weight by a significant margin. Eyeballing a dose by counting pieces or estimating by eye is one of the most common ways beginners end up with an experience far stronger or weaker than intended.
A basic digital kitchen or jewelry scale, accurate to 0.1 grams, solves this completely and costs very little. Weigh your dose every time, even once you are experienced. It removes the single biggest source of unpredictability from the entire process.
Setting matters as much as the number on the scale
A dose of 1.5 grams on an empty stomach, in a calm, familiar space, with a sober person nearby, tends to feel very different from the same 1.5 grams on a busy day, after a big meal, in an unfamiliar or stressful environment. Food in the stomach slows and dulls onset, which is part of why edibles and dried mushrooms taken with food can feel less predictable. For a first experience, an empty stomach, a clear afternoon or evening with nothing else required of you, and a trusted, sober sitter make a bigger difference to how the dose actually feels than an extra half gram in either direction. If you are still deciding between formats entirely, our full breakdown of edibles versus dried mushrooms covers how food and formulation change onset and intensity in more detail.
Choosing a beginner friendly strain
Not every Psilocybe cubensis strain doses the same way. Classic, well documented strains such as Golden Teacher and B+ tend to produce a gentle, forgiving curve that scales predictably with weight, which is exactly why they show up so often in beginner recommendations. Denser, more potent cultivars like Penis Envy can deliver a noticeably stronger experience at the same gram weight, sometimes 30 to 60 percent more intense by some estimates, which is a meaningful difference when you are still learning your own response. For a first purchase, we would point almost anyone toward the classic strains in our magic mushroom collection rather than a premium, high potency pick.
For a deeper look at why certain strains feel so different from one another at the neurological level, our piece on what magic mushrooms actually do to your brain walks through the serotonin receptor activity behind the experience itself.
What too much actually feels like, and what to do
Taking more than intended is uncomfortable, sometimes frightening in the moment, but not medically dangerous for the overwhelming majority of healthy adults. The most common description is a sense of being overwhelmed, time distortion, and difficulty following a single train of thought. If this happens, the most reliable response is simple. Move to a dim, quiet, familiar space. Sit or lie down. Breathe slowly and deliberately. Remind yourself, out loud if it helps, that the feeling is temporary and chemical, not permanent. A calm, sober sitter who can simply stay present, without trying to fix anything, is often the single most helpful thing in the room.
This is also exactly why we never recommend a first experience be taken entirely alone, and why every order over a certain size ships with clear dosage guidance rather than assuming customers already know.
How this connects to what we actually sell
Every strain across our full menu is independently lab tested for potency before it is listed, which is what makes a gram based guide like this one meaningful in the first place. A dosage chart is only useful if the product behind it is consistent. You can read exactly how that testing works on our lab testing and quality page. If you are more interested in a sub perceptual, daily approach rather than a full experience, our companion piece on microdosing in Ottawa covers the Fadiman protocol and what a 100 to 300 milligram routine actually looks like day to day.
Fresh mushrooms versus dried, does the math change
Occasionally someone asks whether a dosage guide written in dried grams still applies to fresh mushrooms. It does not, at least not one to one. Fresh Psilocybe cubensis is mostly water, typically around 90 percent by weight, so the same psilocybin content that sits in 1 gram dried is spread across roughly 10 grams fresh. As a rough conversion, multiply a dried target by ten to estimate the fresh equivalent, though this is an approximation rather than a lab measurement, since moisture content varies by batch and drying method.
In practice, this is one more reason dried product, weighed on a proper scale, is the easier and more predictable format for anyone still learning their own response. It removes an entire layer of conversion math that fresh mushrooms otherwise require, and it is part of why our full menu focuses on properly dried, lab tested strains rather than fresh stock that can vary from harvest to harvest.
Redosing, and why patience beats a second dose
A common beginner mistake happens around the 45 minute mark. The first wave of effects feels subtle, maybe just a little warmth or lightness, and it is tempting to assume the dose was too low and take more right away. Psilocybin's onset is gradual. Effects typically begin within 20 to 40 minutes and continue building for well over an hour before reaching a peak, so what feels mild at 45 minutes can feel completely different by the 90 minute mark.
Stacking a second dose on top of a first that has not fully kicked in is the single most common reason a beginner ends up far more intense an experience than intended. If you are genuinely unsure whether your first dose has taken effect, the safer move is almost always to wait a full 90 minutes before considering anything further, not 45.
Common dosage myths worth retiring
A few pieces of dosage folklore circulate constantly, and most of them do not hold up well. "More is always a more spiritual experience" is one. Intensity and insight are not the same thing, and plenty of people report their most meaningful, clear headed sessions at moderate doses rather than heroic ones. "Tolerance never matters for occasional use" is another. Psilocybin tolerance builds quickly with back to back use and resets within roughly one to two weeks, which is exactly why protocols like the Fadiman microdosing schedule build in rest days rather than daily use.
A third myth worth retiring is that capsules and dried mushrooms cannot really be compared on the same gram scale. They can, and should be. A microdose capsule containing 200 milligrams of dried mushroom powder is chemically the same starting material as 0.2 grams weighed from a jar, just pre measured for convenience. Understanding the gram based tiers above makes every format, capsules, dried pieces, or edibles, easier to reason about consistently.
The short version
Start at 1 to 1.5 grams of a classic strain like Golden Teacher or B+. Weigh it on a real scale. Take it on an empty stomach, in a calm space, with a sober person nearby. Body weight matters less than you think, setting matters more. Everything above that is refinement, not a different starting point.
